Friends of Frome Valley

About us        

The Friends of Frome Valley Medical Centre (“the Charity”) were formed in 1998 initially to raise funds to support the setting up of the ‘new surgery’ in Court Road.

The Constitution was formulated with the help of the Charities Commission and was formally adopted on 21st December 1998.

We operate in conjunction with the practice and our primary focus is raising money through various fundraising events, donations and receipts in memory of loved ones, collection boxes, and of course monies from the ‘200’ Club Lottery, to purchase specialised equipment for the surgery which is beyond NHS resources, for the benefit of staff, patients and carers and to generally support the work of the Medical Centre.

Since our foundation we have made grants of over £69,000 to pay for equipment and facilities to improve the treatment and care of the patients.


The Constitution

Our Objects    

The Charity’s objects are the relief of sickness of patients of the Frome Valley Medical Centre and the provision of transport, equipment and other amenities, and generally to support the charitable work of the centre.


Our Patron

Dr Elaine Anderson became the first Patron of the Charity at the Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 3rd December 2014

The role of Patron is incorporated into our management structure within our Constitution.

There are no specific responsibilities or liabilities attached to this role.

The Patron stands apart from the Trustees and the Committee and will not be called to make decisions on behalf of the Friends.

The Patron promotes and supports the ‘objects’ of the Charity, helps raise awareness of the work of the Friends and their public profile, and provides professional advice and expert insight enabling the committee to ensure our constitution and objects are relevant to the ongoing needs of the surgery and the patients.


The Trustees

The trustees have specific legal responsibilities

The Trustees are collectively responsible for the decisions and management of the Charity and ensuring good governance

The Trustees do not manage the Charity in isolation

The Trustees ensure the committee functions appropriately


Our Executive Committee

The Executive Committee stand down every year but may offer themselves for e-election at the AGM

Members of the Executive Committee are not automatically appointed Trustees

At the AGM of the Charity the members elect a chairman, a treasurer and a secretary (the Honorary Officers)

They formally seek views of members’ of the Charity – feedback is very important and always welcome

They work in conjunction with the Practice and the Patient Participation Group


The executive committee consists of:


  • the Honorary Officers are elected at the annual general meeting

Chairman, Treasurer and Secretary.

  • not less than 4 and not more than 12 members who shall hold office

Election of Executive Committee

As per the constitution all committee members stand down at the AGM but may offer themselves for re-election

Nominations for election/re-election to the Executive Committee must be received by the secretary by Monday 17th November

Anyone over 18 years of age and registered at the Medical Centre will be able to vote on various issues at the AGM and is eligible to stand for election to the Committee

Friends of Frome Valley Medical Centre is open to any person over the age of 18 years interested in furthering the objects of the Charity

Patients meeting the criteria and currently registered with Frome Valley Medical Centre, have automatic membership, shall be classed as Voting Members, and can exercise their right to use their vote.

Members are able to attend the AGM and to vote on various issues at the AGM, and are eligible to stand for election to the Executive Committee.

Members keep the trustees and executive committee up to date with the needs of the community served by the Medical Centre, act as a pool of volunteers and potential trustees, provide fundraising opportunities, and help to raise the profile of the Charity

Supporters and people who are not registered at the practice may become members but may not vote

We are keen to enlist the support of ‘specialist’ volunteers.

If you have any suggestions for future events and activities we would like to hear from you.

If you would like to consider individual fundraising on behalf of the Friends (for example coffee mornings, open gardens, sponsored weight loss, collection box at home for your loose change) please contact our secretary for a fundraising pack.


The ‘200’ Club Lottery

The Lottery is registered under Schedule 1 of the Lotteries and Amusements Act 1976

The Lottery is otherwise known as The ‘200’ Club

The ‘200’ Club is registered to Northavon District Council and the conditions relating to private lotteries will be observed.

Promoter : Dr G Clarke – for and on behalf of the Friends of Frome Valley Medical Centre

The club will be restricted to 200 members.

The number and value of the prizes are published at the beginning of the year.

All remaining monies from the Lottery are spent on specialist equipment for the benefit of staff and patients of the Frome Valley Medical Centre as requested by the practice

Annual subscription £12 per number allocated January to December

Prize draws are made at the end of each month.

Donations/Legacies/Bequests           Legacies are vital to the work of the Friends. Many of our purchases of equipment have only been made possible through the generosity of those who have made bequests to the Friends, very often in expression of their gratitude for the care they have received at the surgery.
