Community Midwives

Based at Yate Westgate Centre (Tel: 01454 315355)

Remember to take folic acid for three months before planned conception. Please see a GP if there are any particular pre-conception concerns. If there are no problems you do not need to see a GP to confirm that you are pregnant but should arrange to see a midwife for a booking appointment. Antenatal and postnatal care is often shared between the midwife, the GP and, where necessary, the Hospital.

Community Nurses

The district nursing team provides services to patients who are housebound and unable to visit their GP or local health centre.

The district nursing service provides individualised patient-centered care that takes account of patient choice.

The team promotes health and maximises independence in the community. The district nursing team works in partnership with local communities and other agencies.

To contact the district nurses, please ring the Kingswood Locality Office on 0117 330 2506.  This line will be open Monday-Friday 8:30am to 5:00pm.  If you need a nurse or therapist out of hours and are known to the team you can telephone St. Martin's switchboard to get a message to the member of staff on 01225 831400.

Health Visitors

Health visitors are a crucial part of the healthcare team. Their aim is to improve the health of families and children in the crucial first few years of life. Working in the community, they prevent illness and promote health and wellbeing.

From pregnancy through to a child's fifth birthday, health visitors are instrumental in supporting and educating families through an important time of their lives. Their role includes:

  • parenting support and advice on family health and minor illnesses
  • new birth visits which include advice on feeding, weaning and dental health
  • physical and developmental checks
  • providing families with specific support on subjects such as post natal depression
  • ongoing contact with families during the first year, between one to three years and three to five years.

The health visitors are no longer based at Frome Valley Medical Centre, but at Yate Westgate Centre instead.  To contact them, please dial 01454 338809.
